with over a decade of large scale PC support along with building my own machines - sometimes on old HP hulks - I'll still take a used HP with issues over a brand new DELL any day - HP's support is second to none in my book despite DELL's aggressive marketing to the contrary. DELL notebooks are support nightmares whereas HP's newest offerings are a definite indication that they merged what was right about HP and Compaq's laptop divisions. All HP needs to do is slim their headcount and slim their offering count and keep the R&D going to be successful.
